Creating the Canvas with Angelclaud ArtRoom
November 12, 2012 in Designer Focus
Today, we are chatting with Angela from GingerScraps and MScraps! Angela is a template designer who has a knack for using clusters (one of her favorite things to do, as you’ll find out later) in her designs. Before we find out how this multilingual, music-loving designer got her start, Angela provided a coupon just for us!
For Real Life Scrapped, Angelclaud ArtRoom is offering 10% off at either her GingerScraps or MScraps stores! Just use code realdeal4real by Nov. 16th. Once you see her templates, you’ll want to snap up a few for your digiscrap stash!
Tell us a little bit about yourself outside of the digital scrapbooking world.
I am 31 years old, and I live in Jakarta, Indonesia. I speak English, Chinese Mandarin, and Bahasa Indonesia. I am a SAHM to my 2.5 years old daughter.
You’ve been scrapbooking digitally for about 2 years. What led you to start designing your own products?
I started creating templates to give away as freebies on my Facebook fan page. Then I participated in Browniescraps’ Bake Off competition and was offered a guest spot at the store. And that’s how I started to become interested in designing templates.
What inspires your designs and how would you describe your style? Do you have any designers who have influenced you?
My scrapbooking style would be more towards the clustering type. I love to cluster, and my layouts don’t feel complete without clusters. Although I also love the blended and mixed media styles, I am trying to learn more about them and to expand into different styles. I love learning new things, and I think I’m forever changing my design style.
A lot of different things inspire my design. It could be colors, photos, kits, or just general designing principles.
For example, I was inspired by some circus balancing act photos I saw on Google, and therefore created the template: Balancing Act.
I wanted to create a template to show the use of rectangles in layouts so I came up with: Tangle with Me.
I really learned a lot from designers at Browniescraps. They have a real passion for templates and I learned a lot about how to make a good quality template from them.
What’s your favorite part of the design process? What is the one design tool you can’t live without?
My favorite part of the design process is probably the embellishing part. After I lay out the basic structure, I like to embellish to make it more interesting/unique; adding things here and there; emphasizing the focal points, etc.
I design with Photoshop, and the design tool that I find hard to live without (now that I am so used to it) is my Wacom Tablet. It actually belonged to my hubby who was a fashion designer student. It’s quite old already, but it still works great. It really helped relieve my wrist pain and allows me to scrap and design more.
Being a mother of a toddler, when do you find time to design?
I normally design when my daughter’s asleep. I wake up 1 hour earlier than my daughter, then during her naptime, and after her bedtime. So I’m stealing time here and there. LOL. It helps that I have a full-time nanny (which is really quite common in Indonesia) so I have time to scrap and also design templates.
Describe your workspace/area. Can you share a photo with us?
My workspace is a mess. I work with a desktop PC in my room. My room’s quite packed as we had to accommodate another single bed for my daughter, who is still sleeping with us. So it’s not exactly viewable for the public. ;-p
Which of your products did you have the most fun designing and why?
This is truly such a hard question. I truly have fun when designing all the products. Each of them has different fun and challenges.
I had so much fun playing with the Halloween shapes in Defying Gravity.
With going crazy on clustering in Cluster Crazy.
With thinking up the journal prompts for Summer Stories.
It’s always fun to see a designer’s favorite products! Now what are some of your favorite layouts made with your products?
Hide and Seek by Swastinadia
The paper layering of the page is so awesome. I really like how Nadia replaced the papers with photos. She paid attention to so many small details, including the faded “hide and seek” words, the word balloon, and the title work. They all conveyed her message really well and made the page so fun.
Carousel Cruising by Skippyherron
How can you not love this layout with such fun photos and ride? Look at the bright smiles in the photos and the element clusters also all scream out FUN.
Sweet 16 by Conny
I love the color contrast between the black/grey with the pink. As you know (or you should know by know), I’m a pink lover so I think it’s just so striking. Additionally, Conny’s clustering and shadowing is just superb.
Clothes Pin by Dutch Diva
I love how Petra made such a little, not really interesting subject into a very interesting one. The photo is awesome and her journaling is just so funny. The clusters around the photo really put emphasize on the main focal point too.
Do you have time to scrap or is most of your time spent designing products?
I absolutely also make time to scrap. I am not willing to give up scrapping for designing because I still love to preserve memories and it’s important for me.
What are 5 fun facts about yourself?
1. I love reading. I read almost every day on my Kindle. I like romance and paranormal romance books. Some of my favorite authors are Sherrilyn Kenyon, Gaelen Foley, Alyssa Day, Nalini Singh, Julia Quinn, and lots more.
2. I play the piano. I started learning when I was 7. I’m not exactly a good pianist, but I like to play piano just for fun/enjoyment. My favorite composers are Mozart and Chopin.
3. I love musicals. I fell totally in love with musicals when I watched Phantom of the Opera in Singapore in 2007. It’s so hard to find anything musical-related in Indonesia so I often have to fly to other countries to watch the show. Whenever I go traveling, I always check to see if they have any musicals playing that I’m interested in. So far I’ve seen POTO, Aida, Rudolf, and The King and I.
4. My favorite colors are pink and purple and generally a more pastel type of color, so you’ll probably see a lot of those in my designs.
5. I love to travel and try to travel to other countries at least once every year.
What famous person would you like to meet and why?
I would love to meet Andy Lau. He is a Cantonese actor and singer. I’ve been in love with him since I was 12. He’s the first idol I fell in love with during my adolescent years and the one that I still love up till now.
Here in the U.S., we are coming up on several holidays. What’s your favorite holiday and why?
I don’t really celebrate a lot of holidays. The only one I always celebrate is Chinese New Year – that’s the most important holiday for Chinese people.
What do you love most about being a part of the scrapbooking community?
I love meeting people who are also enthusiastic about scrapbooking and just learning from each other. It’s also amazing how helpful everyone can be, and it’s a great community in general.
Lastly, what are you working on now? Do you have a “sneak peek” for our readers?
I have so many plans and ideas and I really don’t know what I’ll work on first. Definitely something winter or Christmas theme for the upcoming holiday and also perhaps some web-templates.
We’ll definitely keep our eyes out for your new releases, Angela! Thank you so much for stopping by to chat with us. Angela also provided Real Life Scrapped with an exclusive template that will be good for the next three weeks: Especially Real. Just click on the preview to download.
